The Baylor track and field teams hosted the Michael Johnson Classic Saturday at the Hart-Patterson Track & Field Complex.
Junior Darold Williamson shattered top-ranked teammate sophomore Jeremy Wariner's record with a time of 44.59 to win the 400-meter race. The time is the fastest in the world so far this year.
Williamson was named Big 12 Athlete of the Week for the second time. He previously received the award during the indoor track season. He passed the 45.21 record Wariner set last week in Tempe, Ariz. The feat places Williamson in a tie for second place with Raymond Pierre on Baylor's all-time 400 list, behind only two-time Olympian and the meet's namesake, Michael Johnson, who ran a 44.21 in 1990.
'I think the best thing that came out of the race is I proved people wrong,' Williamson said. 'I'm overlooked and overshadowed, but it doesn't bring me down. It gives me the drive to work harder.'
Williamson said he was happy he was able to run in front of his family. He also recognized that the Baylor fan support was larger than usual.
'It felt good to have some fan support,' Williamson said. 'Because we very seldom receive any. We don't get supported [at Baylor].'
The reason the Bears had more support was because the spring football game was next door, he said.
Head Coach Clyde Hart said he was proud of his athletes.
'I think that they're just following in the tradition of great athletes in the past,' Hart said. 'Darold and Jeremy were outstanding performers in high school, and, if we're doing our job properly, they'll continue to improve.'
Williamson and Wariner joined sophomore Jamen Saziru and senior Joel Martin to take first place in the 4x440-yard relay at 3:07.06.
